A new course teaches Ontario police recruits and t

A new course teaches Ontario police recruits and the public how to defuse a mental health crisis.

Ontario now offers an 18-hour course that teaches police recruits how to deal with people suffering from a mental health crisis, marking the first time such training has been offered to the province’s law enforcement cadets. In addition to police receiving this training, Stay Safe has already started to provide this course entitled Public-Police Interactions Training to new industry trainers.

The course pulls on a combination of years of research, key recommendations from coroner’s inquests as well as community consultations, according to Jennifer Lavoie, an associate professor of psychology and criminology at Wilfrid Laurier University and co-lead of the mental health crisis response training program

Today we speak to President of Stay Safe on this new course he is teaching that is being adopted by security instructors across Canada.

Recently we invited 3 of our Sentinel alumni’s to our theatre who are all serving as police officers for Hamilton and Peel.

They came down to pour their knowledge and experience to our existing Sentinels who are pursuing a career in policing.

The extra surprise was them all finding out that our current manager was now moving to a rewarding career with Halton Police Service.

We love to see our people grow and move closer to their policing or professional career goals. We are their biggest fans!

We have built an entire infrastructure and development program from our extensive training, incredible list of client sites in the events, hospitality and health care environments and now The Arena Global. Toronto’s law enforcement and security facility created with the main purpose to help our people get their physical goals in check and pass the police physical.

We do all this because we want to be part of their journey……even if their time with us is for short time.

In this episode chat with Rico King about why he thinks Toronto is struggling to tackle a growing gun problem.

Rico King is an American documentary filmmaker who is putting his lens on the people and communities impacted by gun violence in Toronto.

Rico King is also a film producer, director, screenwriter & actor best known for producing Tears in the Bayou. In 2016, Rico was awarded the prestigious Best Film and Best Documentary at the Mount Vernon Film Festival for his film Down in the Hole, a documentary about police brutality and life in Baltimore, MD. In 2017 he then also received the prestigious diamond award for his documentary Tears in the Bayou along with two more awards for a short film he shot for SAG-AFTRA called With Dad.

Having been a resident of all the neighborhoods in his films, Rico traditionally dedicates his characters to real life people he knew or events he experienced or witnessed. In addition to working as a film producer and actor, Rico King is also an entrepreneur and community activist.

His charity work includes the No Shoot Zone, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of young children and their neighborhoods and The Kingdom's Children, a non-profit that helps house, clothe and pay for the education of orphans in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.”

Jim Bremner is no stranger to threats. With over 30 year’s experience in law enforcement - including uniform patrol, emergency response tactical unit as Special Weapons Team leader, and a member and trainer of the bomb squad, Jim had no idea his biggest challenge would come off the job - suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D).

Drawing from his own life experience, Jim has co-authored ‘Crack in the Armor: a police officer’s guide to surviving post traumatic stress disorder’, a self-help guide written to assist first responders in understanding the effects of work-related critical incident stress.
