Complacency – Never Get too Comfortable

While the whole topic of covid can feel overwhelming, overdrawn, and quite frankly at this point – I think most are just over it entirely – its important to remember that it is very much still active.

When we look back to the beginning, we can truly see the distance we have gone when it comes to this pandemic.

We went from a society on edge. Lining up just to get into grocery stores, hoarding toilet paper, and looking at everyone – even those we know well, with a little bit of side eye. Suspicious of who may or may not be carrying this coronavirus.

Our days felt dark and long. Overshadowed by never ending news updates. News briefings from heads of state. Cautions from health officials.

We stayed home.

We read books. We baked bread. We knit. We crafted. We binged. We ate. We worked from home. We educated our children from home. We took classes online. We stayed together – while apart.

We did all the things and have come so far as a society.

We’ve held out for so long and missed out on so many things that we would otherwise typically regularly enjoy.

A large number of us are even double vaccinated – the light at the end of the tunnel grows brighter than ever before.

With all of this said – As bright as that light is, now is not the time for complacency.

We aren’t through to the other side of this yet and we need to stick together to ensure that all of our hard work isn’t for nothing.

While we have grown to understand the importance and the value in making safe choices and wise decisions – we need to be mindful that we’re not losing site of our common goal.

By completely putting our guard down and going back to our old ways, we risk dimming that light.

We risk throwing all of the hard work we’ve done, out again.

It will be forever one step forward and two steps back.

By becoming so complacent, we allow further risks not just for ourselves but for those around us.

When things first started to slowly open back up again, one of the things introduced was a slight expansion in our bubbles.

As militant and close minded as it first sounded – and still does. By initiating these tactics, we have been able to make it to where we are today.

The flaw however with bubbles is that while some bubbles are in fact solitary when they go out, others tend to merge with other bubbles. Causing a slight overlap.

While in some cases,  we had tight knit bubbles with open communication – knowing the details of our small little worlds. Who everyone saw, in what capacity, and what was done in the day to day of our little societies.

In other cases, we had our bubbles, and our bubbles would tend to overlap with other bubbles.

Intentions were always the best, but complacency steps in.

It takes one person to let their guard down and potentially compromise an entire unit or operation.

When one bubble is popped. The consequence is one bubble popped.

If that bubble is merged with another bubble, and one of the bubbles is popped, the integrity of both bubbles is if not completely shattered, at a minimum compromised.

While we need to absolutely continue to live our lives.

Make safe choices, and wise decisions.

We need to remember the end goal, and keep in mind how close to the finish we really are here.

We’ve come so far. One step forward and two steps back can’t be an option when we’re this close.

Complacency in life in general can be a slippery slope.

We get too comfortable with where we are that we often lose focus and direction, potentially missing out on a bigger purpose.

Let us not miss out on the bigger purposes.

Let us stick together, boost others in their modes of complacency.

Continue to move forward – together – until we cross that finish line.
