Getting Back on the Wagon

We all go through cycles.

Highs – lows -and everything in between.

We have hopes, dreams, goals.

We build our lives around an intricate balance of personal, family, and work. Delicately sprinkling bits of the things that we are passionate about in between.

We cram as much as physically possible into almost every single day, and by the end of the week we’re so full of all of it that we’re ready to burst.

Some weeks are better than others, some are slower than others.

Having a plan in motion, and a schedule is one way to keep track of what feels like an endless amount of tasks every day.

For some this is easier than others. But planning ahead and organizing your time is useful for ensuring that ideally at the end of the day there is still a little bit left for you. (Or at least a good heads up that there isn’t any space!)

In the Security industry – specifically Event Security – these flows are ever present. There is a season for everything and thus weeks where work is in abundance, and other weeks where you’re allowed to catch your breath a bit.

Then there are the weeks where there are so many things going on that your head is left literally spinning in circles. If you are a type “A” personality and keep everything super organized in the margins of your calendar – you’ll be struggling to pencil in sleep for these days.

Its typically after these periods, or rushes, where we finally get a chance to catch a break and catch up on time missed with family and friends, sleeping, decent meals, and just relaxing in general. This is when finding your way back to routine can be a struggle.

You’ve basically just peaked with your busy cycle, and crashed into most likely exhaustion. The thought of getting back to it and ensuring that your schedule is chalk full of productive and meaningful tasks associated with every aspect of your life, is still rather daunting.

And who can blame you. When you’ve been going none stop for any period of time, the thought of a never ending break seems all too lovely to even think about pushing it aside.

While its important to catch up, to ensure that our mental and physical well being is maintained, if we become too complacent it just gets harder to jump back in.

Balance is a tricky thing. Knowing when to stop and when to start can sometimes be a fine art.

When you do get it all figured out, thats when you’re in the groove. You’re successfully balancing all aspects and ensuring that if not at the end of the day, than at least by the end of the week – everything and everyone is looked after.

If you take your average Monday – Friday office job, you can associate tasks to be completed by each day – so that Friday you have your Friday tasks, and time to ensure everything else for that week is sorted. Then you have your weekend allotted to time for yourself and your family.

This is the easy one.

When it comes to events and Security, it doesn’t quite work the same. However, when it comes to Event Security, there is one perk that your average office job doesn’t have. When your event is done – its over. You typically don’t need to dwell on it or think about it past the end of your shift. If you have a report to submit – do it right away. Write up your notes, submit them before you leave the site, and your day is complete and you can wrap it up and move on to the next one. Never having to worry about the stress of bringing your work home with you, or having to come in the next day to a mountain of paperwork.

Being able to stay on top in those regards helps to make things a little bit easier. As long as you take the basic steps to ensure that by the time the sun comes up the next day, you’re fully embracing the tasks ahead, and not worrying about the ones before – it will all be ok.

Finding your way into a happy groove and balancing everything will always be a challenge. But the more routine you can give yourself, the easier things will become. Sticking to that routine as long as possible will ideally help make it easier to switch on and off during the periods of highs and lows – always giving you something to rely on, and possibly even – look forward too.
