When it comes to hiring a Security company for your business, doing your research is very important. Hiring a company based solely on cost may not actually be the best decision.

Doing your due diligence and knowing exactly who you’re hiring will make or break your security needs.

In a recent article, they discussed how the National Energy Board hired a private security company to provide security for the public hearings about the Energy East Pipeline in Montreal in 2016. The company hired didn’t show up for meetings regarding the hearings before hand thus missing out on a lot of important details regarding their role. Roles and responsibilities that would have been detailed at this meeting were then misunderstood and misinterpreted.

When the actual hearings began, the Protestors were able to successfully interrupt the proceedings and the National Energy Board was forced to leave before the hearing was complete.

The security company hired was ill prepared to deal with the Protestors from the beginning. Their lack of preparation, knowledge, positioning, and roles was just a start. Once the Protestors gained entry, they also had the opportunity to hear all of Security’s plans. The Security company hired didn’t bother with earpieces so all communication was done within proximity of the uninvited guests and broadcast for all to hear.

Not only does open communication provide the public with the opportunity to hear everything that is going on – which could lead to further security issues and breaches, but it is also a huge privacy issue. There is often the potential for confidential information to be said amongst Security, and making these things more easily accessible to the public is a very big breach of privacy.

The National Energy Board subsequently abandoned the meeting with plans to reschedule at a later date. Eventually the whole project was scrapped due to rising opposition and environmental concerns.

All of that aside, their was open debate regarding the use of private security companies and the Governments use of them.

For a Security company to fail to attend meetings prior to the event and fail to organize themselves accordingly, trouble is bound to happen. Communication is key in any industry – especially this one. Being prepared and knowing how to position yourself against any and all possible threats is key to your success. To hire a security company to protect you against something, only for them to allow it all to happen anyway is a huge let down.

The use of private security companies allows the finger to be pointed at someone else when something goes wrong. While it is the Security company’s job to obviously provide the services they’ve been contracted to do, its also up to the Company hiring them to know who they are hiring.

In this industry – reputation is everything. If your brand develops a reputation of skipping meetings and providing less then adequate security, you can bet you won’t be getting too many contracts going forward.

At Sentinel Security Plus, skipping meetings is definitely not something you need to worry about. We are well versed in a multitude of Security events and types, so we are prepared to handle whatever our clients need. We have regular training with our Security and stay up to date on what is happening. Security doesn’t have to be hard, and it doesn’t have to be the cheapest or most expensive. Find a company that works for you and with you. Not one that works on their schedule and by their means.

Middle ground is a wonderful place when it can be found.
