Self Care – Keeping the Glass Full

Self care, Self love – whichever you want to refer to it as, is becoming a hot topic. More frequently, people seem to be coming apart at the seems. While most of us do our best to help as many people as we can, often we forget about ourselves. Ensuring that you have a cup to pour from at the end of the day – is becoming more and more vital.

Society is still in a lot of ways co-dependent. We’re all relying on each other for the random helping hand or pick me up when we’re feeling down. Most of us are very quick to offer and wouldn’t think twice at the thought. We give and give and give and while we go to bed at night with the knowledge that we’ve helped others – is that really enough?

How long can we keep giving before we our selves find our selves needing the helping hand?

If we all take time out during the day – even just a few short minutes to pause and push the focus inwards and make sure we ourselves are ok, we will keep our selves more full. More thought of. More loved.

We’re acknowledging the fact that while others need help, we are still worth something too and we deserve to give ourselves attention.

Taking half an hour or even a few minutes a day to ourselves should no longer be considered a crime. This isn’t us being selfish. This is us making sure that we ourselves are full. Our minds, bodies and souls are just as looked after and nourished as those we are trying to help. Keeping us topped up so that when we do often find ourselves putting ourselves out there and helping others, we genuinely have something to give.

Imagine. If everyone took a few moments while we are awake to look inside and acknowledge that we have worth. We have strength. We have kindness. We deserve all the good in the world as much as the next person. We can eventually push out all the negative thoughts we sometimes have. Becoming positive and lighter – and thus spreading the same feelings and sentiments to those around us.

While misery may love company, so does a smile. The simple act of a smile to a random stranger or passerby can even if only momentarily, change someones day. That quick smile was intended for them. They were worthy of someones positive energy. It may put a bit more of a spring in their step or change the direction of their day entirely.

We all do struggle an we are all entitled to bad days. As long as we don’t let them consume us and remember our worth – in the end we can come out on top.

Yes – there may sometimes be monsters among us. Those that went unloved for so long that even a few moments a day may not change their cold and callous ways. We can’t say these people don’t exist. We read about them in the news. They’re out there and they do horrendously bad things.

They leave the people around them pouring from their own cups and picking up the pieces. Sheltering, confiding, helping, rescuing, or picking up the broken pieces. Life isn’t always fair. Even those with the fullest cups are drained at the end of the day. We can only give from ourselves so much.

In the security industry especially – our job is to help people. Keep them safe. Make them feel like nothing bad can happen. In security, cups can drain awfully quick. Which is why in this industry especially, we have to realize our worth. Know our value and ensure that the people we are protecting feel the warmth and positivity radiating from deep within us – not just projected and flung half spirited and forced.

Having a bad start to your day? Take the time it takes to get to your job and focus on yourself. Remember that you’re worth it and that your strength matters.

Had a bad day? The commute home – yours to reflect on the negativity. Understand it, and by the end of the commute, push it aside and forget it happened. Tomorrow is a new day and a fresh start. Realizing and understanding that mistakes happen, moments happen, and life is in fact not perfect – this is half the battle. Learning and growing from it – this is where the real action is. This is where we blossom and shine.
